Parliament to meet tomorrow, decision on Speaker and Deputy Speaker to be made today
The first session of the 13th National Parliament begins tomorrow, Thursday. However, it was not clear until yesterday who will preside over the opening session and who will be the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the new parliament.
These issues may be decided at the parliamentary party meeting of the ruling party BNP held on Wednesday morning. The meeting will be chaired by Parliament Leader and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. BNP sources said that the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker and the issue of presiding at the beginning of the session may be discussed and decided there.
Due to the majority, usually the ruling party's nominees are elected as Speaker and Deputy Speaker. Members are elected to these two posts from the ruling party itself. However, this time, BNP has proposed to give the post of Deputy Speaker to the opposition party Jamaat-e-Islami. It is not yet certain whether Jamaat-e-Islami will take this post or not. A decision on this matter may be taken in the opposition party's meeting today
